Sand Martin Nest Bank Project

We have plans to install a Sand Martin Nest Bank ready for their arrival in Spring 2025. We are seeking donations to make this happen so please read on for details of how to sponsor a box.

How to Donate:

If you would like to sponsor, and be allocated a numbered box from one of the proposed 48 nest boxes within the bank, we are asking for a donation of £50 per box.

All donations (any amount welcome) to the Sand Martin fund can be made either directly to our bank account, or by cheque sent to our treasurer Chris Kirton, details below:

Or by Cheques payable to ‘Unstead Nature Community Group’ sent to Chris Kirton at 9 Home Farm Road, Godalming, GU7 1TX.

Anyone willing to gift-aid a donation (thus adding 25%) can request a form from Chris at treasurer@unstead-reserve.org

Proposed Design

• 8′ by 4′ wooden box’s, on a raised platform, with 48 nesting holes and access for volunteers and bird ringers.
• Based on a commercial design that has proven effective on many sites including being used on RSPB and WWT reserves.
• Green living roof and rendered external walls to help blend into surroundings.
• Improvements on commercial available design with inclusion of pre-made nesting chambers.
• Similar designs are being successfully used on a number of sites.
• Easily duplicated/expandable in future if it proves to be a success.
• Equally, relatively easy to deconstruct and move if it proves to be in the wrong location.

Construction

• To be constructed and installed by UNCG and or Corporate volunteers, (UNCG volunteers have recent construction experience with the design and construction of the new viewing platform).
• Prefabricated construction to take place in the compound area, with the final construction taking place at the chosen location.
• To be installed by the start of March 2025 in time for the first returning 2025 Sand Martins.
